The Spiritual Self
In my last two blog posts, we explored The Spiritual Self which forms the essence of who we are at our core. The Spiritual Self speaks to our higher purpose, residing in the existential query of ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Why am I here?’
Though it can be immensely challenging to shuck the concerns and pressures of day-to-day living, it is in this ability that we can begin to bypass the transient existence and consider the bigger picture.
As always when we embark upon self-enquiry, please be sure to meditate, breathe and bring yourself into the space of the heart.
If you are new to meditation or my practice, I invite you to join our Facebook group, Playing Bigger Playing Beautiful and familiarise yourself with my philosophies and coaching style. Once your join request is approved, you will be greeted with a meditation to get you started. Click here to access it.
Tuning into The Spiritual Self is essential for those seeking to connect to a higher purpose and enjoy greater peace, clarity and perspective. This increased awareness also enables us to draw deeply from our relationships — personal and professional — and enjoy a greater sense of connection to our fellow-humans and the natural world.
Are you able to differentiate between what your head (rational brain), heart (emotional brain) or gut (intuitive brain) are telling you? And can you use this information to connect with your spirituality, make wise decisions, learn from the past, avoid unhealthy patterning and even use that wisdom to grow your business?
Our self-enquiry exercise, delves further into The Spiritual Self. We will examine our response to the overarching notions arising when we move our focus from our earth-bound existence to instead consider the broader implications of life’s purpose. This time, we will place a special focus on The Spirit.
As you may have discovered already, attempting to separate The Spiritual Self from our physical existence in the here and now — things like that all consuming to-do list and everyone in our lives who relies on us — can, at first, be challenging. Like any form of exercise, practice will help and the “muscles” you need will become stronger. Do not feel disheartened if it doesn’t flow as easily as you would like in the first instance. You can repeat the meditation any time you wish. Now, please sit back, relax and gently ponder these journal questions.
The goal is to turn the volume down on the noise of daily life and tune into the root of who you are. It is here that you will find the answers you seek.
For example, if you were to peel back the layers of your experiences, your upbringing, your worries and your joys, what would remain underneath? What is the singular truth of who you are? The part of you that you will carry into the next life.
Levels of Understanding
If you are familiar with my work, and in particular with my model of emotional self-inquiry The 6 Selves™, you will know that there are three levels of understanding that inform connections to the self and how it manifests:
Level 1 – Intellect (Mind) – How we comprehend and make sense of the world around us
Level 2 – Emotion (Body) – How we physically feel the experience
Level 3 – Energetic (Spirit) – How we connect in to something greater than ourselves
The Spiritual Self – Spirit
In this post, we are looking at the Energetic (Spirit) and how this connects to The Spiritual Self. Please ask yourself the following prompting questions. You will notice they are repetitive in nature. Please know they are designed this way to ignite deeper personal inquiry.
- How does my spirit feel when I consider the bigger picture?
- How does my spirit feel when I consider why I am / why we are here on this planet?
- How does my spirit feel when I consider how my business / career expresses my reason for being here?
- When my business is doing well, how does my spirit feel when I consider myself and the world at large?
- When my business isn’t doing so well, how does my spirit feel when I consider myself and the world at large?
- If I was to be fully present in every moment, how might my business transform?
- If I was more connected to my Spiritual Self, how might I show up differently in my business / career?
- If I was more connected to my Spiritual Self, how might I interact with family, friends and loved ones?
- If I was more connected to my Spiritual Self, how might I interact with clients, referral, partners and collaborators / employers / colleagues etc?
Gentle self-enquiry makes space to check in with yourself, in the same way you would inquire how a dear friend is doing. It encourages you to adopt the same compassion and open-mindedness that you would extend to another.
My next post will introduce The Emotional Self with regards to how it connects to the Intellect (Mind) at a level one understanding. I look forward to sharing it with you.
